Did the Browns make a mistake with Thaddeus Lewis?
Perhaps it's time for the question to be asked, following yesterday's announcement that Brandon Weeden will once again start against the Green Bay Packers. Rob Chudzinski's decision wasn't exactly received well in all corners by the fans, many of whom seem to be at an end of their patience with the second-year QB.
For whatever reason, Jason Campbell, signed during the off-season, has yet to see the field.
At the same time, one-time Browns third QB, Thaddeus Lewis, had an impressive showing for the Bills against the Cincinnati Bengals, throwing two touchdowns via the air, and rushing for another.
So, is there enough evidence to say that the Browns made a mistake in releasing Lewis in favor of signing Campbell? Or is it too early to rush to judgement?
Lewis has produced solid numbers every time he has had a chance to start in the NFL, most recently going 19-of-32 for 216 yards, two touchdowns, and no interceptions against a pretty good defense. In his one start in Cleveland, Lewis earned a respectable but not outstanding 83.3 quarterback rating, with a 22-of-32 performance with one touchdown and one interception.
Meanwhile, Weeden continues to struggle and Campbell has yet to get a chance during the regular season. Hoyer, whose signing ostensibly doomed Lewis to being released, was promising for two games and then wound up in injured reserve.
Statistically, there's no contest. Weeden has a lower completion percentage than either of Lewis' starts, hovering around 57% in both 2012 and 2013. In both seasons he's thrown more interceptions than touchdowns.
But Thaddeus Lewis has only started two games. Is it too early to say that the Browns made a mistake when releasing him? Or do you expect Lewis to quickly fade from the NFL scene? Let us know your opinion in the comments!
