Daniel Descalso and David Peralta homered for the Diamondbacks but the bullpen gave up five runs Thursday in an 8-5 loss to the Milwaukee Brewers at Maryvale Park.
Robbie Ray started and pitched four innings for Arizona. The good: He struck out seven, didn't walk a batter and needed only 34 pitches to get through four innings (31 strikes). The bad: He gave up a long two-run homer to Travis Shaw in the first inning.
"I felt good after that first inning with everything," Ray told mlb.com. "My fastball command was doing pretty good for me. I was able to mix it in and out and blow some guys away upstairs, which is something I normally do. That was encouraging."
Ray left with a 4-3 lead, but the Brewers went ahead with three runs (two earned) in the fifth off Tyler Jones, then tacked on a run against Andrew Chafin in the sixth and one against Enrique Burgos in the eighth.
Descalso, returning from playing for Italy in the World Baseball Classic, hit a two-run homer off Matt Garza in the third, and Peralta hit a solo shot off Joba Chamberlain in the fifth. Ketel Marte had three of the D-backs' nine hits.
Peralta's home run was his first of the spring and first since being shut down for the season last June.
"I don't know when I hit the last one," Peralta said. "Just concentrating on getting a base hit and making good contact, and doubles and home runs are going to come.
