Prior to Monday's practice at Southern Methodist University, New Jersey Nets point guard Deron Williams didn't seem likely to re-sign with his current team unless they somehow added Orlando Magic center Dwight Howard.
Judging by Williams' comments after practice, it's hard to believe anything has changed. If a player was committed to helping build a franchise that is preparing for a move to Brooklyn, they probably wouldn't talk about how much they enjoy playing in another building.
"I always like playing here," Williams told reporters when asked about his thoughts on playing at American Airlines Center in Dallas, according to The Star-Ledger. "It's probably my favorite [arena] to play in. I just enjoy playing here — I enjoy playing in front of my friends, family. It's always good they get the chance to come and see me play."
The Mavericks host the Nets at 8:30 p.m. ET tonight.
Williams, a Dallas area product that graduated from The Colony High School, is a free agent at the end of the season. The three-time All-Star could sign with a Mavericks franchise that has plenty of salary cap space.
The speculation is that if the Nets can add Howard through a trade or free agency, then Williams would likely remain with the organization. If that deal doesn't occur, Williams can opt out of the final year of his contract and become an unrestricted free agent.
"You know, I'm just trying to play out the season and look at my options after the season," Williams responded after being asked about his future.
So is it the arena or the thought of playing at home that Williams enjoys most about Dallas?
"Home," Williams said. "[And] I just like the arena. I think it's a good shooting background. I just enjoy playing here. Fans — the fans are great. It's always good when arenas have a lot of energy. Ours [the Prudential Center] doesn't have too much energy."
