BOSTON (AP) Dejen Gebremeskel defended his title at the B.A.A. 5K on Saturday as thousands of runners took to the streets in Boston two days before the marathon.
The 2012 Olympic 5,000-meter silver medalist from Ethiopia edged Maine's Ben True in a photo finish, setting a race record of 13 minutes, 26 seconds.
Rhode Island's Molly Huddle came from behind to win the women's race in 15:12.
More than 8,600 entrants finished the 3.1 miles through Boston's Back Bay neighborhood as celebrations of running returned to the city a year after the bombings at last year's marathon.
Huddle was sixth with less than a mile to go. She said that ''I thought it would be great for an American to win this race and so I think it gave me a little extra boost.''
Mamitu Daska of Ethiopia was second in 15:14.
