Defense bests offense in NAU's first scrimmage

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. -- The first scrimmage of Northern Arizona's fall camp is in the books.

The Lumberjacks went head to head for about an hour Saturday afternoon, and in that brief chance to evaluate, it seemed as if the defense was a step ahead of the offense.

“We had a lot of flying around and good contact skills on both sides of the ball,” said NAU coach Jerome Souers. “Our run defense looked very strong. We had kids coming off the blocks very well, and our tackling was crisp.”

While the defense put on a strong performance today, the offense showed that there a few areas in need of cleaning up.

“Our offense had a little bit of trouble moving the ball against the defense, which is a good sign for the defense, but it’s also an indicator that our offense needs to develop,” Souers said.

“I thought our passing game was rough today. We were rotating a lot of receivers out of that position. We have a lot of young and emerging players at the wide receiver position, and sometimes that contributes to miscommunication, and as it was today, we just weren’t very sharp in the passing game.”

Fortunately for the Lumberjacks, it's still early in the camp schedule, as they have 20 days before they take the field in Tucson against Arizona.

“I think, in general, our defense is ahead of our offense in camp, but that’s not unusual for this time of year," Souers said. "In the end, I like where we’re going and I think we’re on track."
