ARLINGTON, Texas — Texas Rangers right-hander Yu Darvish will not make his start Thursday because of tightness in his right quad.
Roy Oswalt will make the start for Darvish, who is now slated to start next Tuesday.
Darvish said in a statement that he felt the quad tighten up during his bullpen session on Tuesday. He said he doesn't feel like it's an injury.
"It's a small problem now and I want to handle it before it becomes a big problem," Darvish said. "We talked it over with the coaches and this is the best decision for me."
Darvish went through his regular workout before Wednesday's game and told manager Ron Washington he could make his start. Washington didn't want to risk Darvish making the quad worse.
"He said he could pitch," Washington said. "You can't take those types of chances. We decided to just skip him until his next time."
Oswalt will be making the start on regular rest. He made a spot start for Ryan Dempster Saturday in Toronto. Oswalt also threw in the bullpen Tuesday night after the team found out Darvish was having issues with his quad.
Darvish is 12-9 this season with a 4.51 ERA. Oswalt has made seven starts for the Rangers. He's 4-2 this season with a 6.04 ERA.
"He (Darvish) will be ready for his next start," Washington said. "We just want to make sure."
