D-backs game report: Saturday, March 1

Published Mar. 1, 2014 6:57 p.m. ET

Diamondbacks 2, Brewers 1

Game recap: The D-backs and Brewers got underway after a 36-minute rain delay pushed back first pitch. The Brewers got to Diamondbacks starter Trevor Cahill quickly, as Logan Schafer tripled in the first inning before being driven in by a Mark Reynolds single. The D-backs scored in the second and third to take a 2-1 lead, which stood until a sudden downpour in the bottom of the fifth inning sent players and fans running for shelter. The game was called off and ruled official, with Cahill getting the win.

Hitting notes: Mark Trumbo opened up second inning with his first home run in a D-backs uniform, blasting a 1-2 pitch deep to right-center field. The Diamondbacks got their other run when a Miguel Montero double in the third inning drove in Paul Goldschmidt, who had walked. Shortstop Chris Owings finished the day with two hits, including a double that came shortly before the game was called.

Pitching notes: As one of the last Diamondbacks starters to see game action this spring, Cahill was eager to get on the mound Saturday. The rain threatened his start but ultimately just delayed it. Cahill ended up getting his scheduled time in, going 3 1/3 innings and allowing one run on two hits with four strikeouts and a walk.

"It was definitely nice to get the first one out of the way," Cahill said. "My curveball was working; I was throwing it for a strike when I had to."

Josh Collmenter relieved Cahill after two batters in the fourth inning. Facing six batters, Collmenter went 1 2/3 innings, allowing one hit and striking out two. The relievers scheduled to throw after Collmenter got their work in by throwing in covered cages.

Short hops: Saturday's game lasted just 1 hour and 44 minutes due to the cancellation for rain. ... After being scratched from Friday's game with a bruised left heel, Trumbo tested the injury Saturday morning and returned to the lineup. .... Tuffy Gosewisch, a candidate for the backup catching job, was held out of action Friday and Saturday with a right calf strain suffered chasing a foul pop-up Thursday. Gibson said the D-backs are being cautious with the injury, so Gosewisch likely will remain unavailable for a few more days. "It's not playable right now," Gosewisch said. "I think it'll just be a couple days." ... Diamondbacks general manager Kevin Towers said Saturday that the competition between Gosewisch and Henry Blanco likely will go all the way through spring training. Both could travel to Australia for the season opener, Towers said, with one of them inactive for the games.

Quotable: "It's nice because right now I can't really remember my routine for getting ready. You can't really throw it off when I don't really remember what it was." -- Trevor Cahill on whether his preparation was impacted by Saturday's rain delay.

Sunday's game: Diamondbacks (3-2) at Brewers (1-2), Maryvale Baseball Park (Phoenix), 1 p.m.

Probable pitchers: D-backs: Wade Miley, Andrew Chafin, Joe Paterson, Ryan Rowland-Smith, Will Harris, Matt Stites. Giants: Tim Hudson, J.C. Gutierrez.
