SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — Never ones to let a craze pass them by, the Diamondbacks got in on the "Harlem Shake" phenomenon currently sweeping the Internet, becoming the first major league team to do so.
Before a Thursday morning spring training workout at Salt River Fields, D-backs players and staff members gathered to film their own version of the Harlem Shake, a viral dance video that has inspired countless parodies.
D-backs president and CEO Derrick Hall starred in the video, and backing him were pitchers and catchers in camp, managing general partner Ken Kendrick, longtime executive Roland Hemond, D-backs mascot Baxter and D-backs 'Legend' mascots of Luis Gonzalez and Randy Johnson.
Manager Kirk Gibson even made a brief appearance, quickly running through the frame, mimicking his famous fist pump from the 1988 World Series.
Among the more notable oddities featured were a lightsaber battle, a giant chicken, a dancing banana and classic cartoon character Gumby.
The idea for the video came from the team's social media department. Team officials brought the idea to Gibson for approval, and the typically serious-minded manager was on board.
