PHOENIX -- Diamondbacks starting pitcher Trevor Cahill left in the second inning of Wednesday's game against the Marlins after being hit by a line drive the previous inning, but he said he expects to make his next start.
The Diamondbacks announced that he had suffered a right hip contusion. Manager Kirk Gibson said after the game he was "not sure" yet if Cahill would make his next start, but Cahill said he does not anticipate missing a start, especially with an extra day of rest.
In the first inning, Marlins outfielder Marcell Ozuna lined a ball off Cahill's right hip. It deflected to Martin Prado, who threw to first for the final out of the inning. Cahill met with the D-backs' trainer in the dugout and the bullpen began to stir, but no one began warming up.
Cahill warmed up to start the second inning and visited again with the trainer and pitching coach Charles Nagy but remained in the game. He threw three pitches before Nagy and the trainer returned to remove him from the game and bring in reliever Josh Collmenter.
"I felt fine, thought I could throw," Cahill said. "I just didn't want to risk anything."
Cahill said he could not push off his right leg as much as usual, and Gibson said that prompted the decision to remove Cahill rather than risk having him injure his arm while overcompensating.
Cahill, 3-8 with a 3.96 ERA entering the day, was looking for his first win since May 17.
The D-backs are already without starting pitcher Brandon McCarthy, who is on the disabled list with shoulder inflammation, and Ian Kennedy, who is serving a 10-game suspension for throwing in the area of Dodgers pitcher Zack Greinke's head.
