Cubs claim lefty Ortiz from Rangers

Left-hander Joseph Ortiz, who opened the 2013 season as a member of the Texas Rangers as a rookie, is now property of the Chicago Cubs after being picked up on a waiver claim Monday.

Ortiz had his 2014 season sidetracked after getting his left foot run over by a motorcycle, which fractured the foot and led to surgery. He ended up making 13 appearances for Double-A Frisco.

Ortiz had four stints with the Rangers during his rookie season and went 2-2 in 32 games with a 4.23 ERA.

The Ortiz move was just one of several involving the Rangers Monday. The club also outrighted right-hander Wilmer Font, catcher J.P. Arencibia and Guilder Rodriguez to Triple A. Texas also activated outfielder Engel Beltre, left-hander Pedro Figueroa and infielder Kevin Kouzmanoff from the 60-day disabled list and outrighted them to Round Rock.

Both Arencibia and Kouzmanoff can become free agents because of their service time in the majors. Font was designated for assignment last week. Font, Beltre, Figueroa and Rodriguez will all be free agents once the World Series ends because of their minor league service time.

The Monday moves leave the Rangers with 37 players on the 40-man roster.
