Critics laud LeBron James' performance in 'Trainwreck'
Cleveland Cavaliers forward LeBron James earned himself some praise from movie critics with his performance in Trainwreck. In the movie James, as himself, plays Aaron's (Bill Hader) best friend.
New York Times movie critic Manohla Dargis wrote, "The looming appearance of LeBron James, who plays himself as well as Aaron's odd-couple-like best friend, may be a heat-seeking gimmick (he's the movie's biggest star), but he's a surprisingly limber comic presence."
USA Today's Brian Truitt said, " LeBron James is a slam dunk as an overly frugal, Downton Abbey-adoring version of himself."
And Moira McDonald of the Seattle Times, wrote: "LeBron James, playing himself, is very, very funny. (Maybe sports fans knew this already? I didn't. But, seriously, if that basketball thing doesn't work out, someone should get this guy his own rom-com; his exuberance and timing, particularly when he suddenly starts quoting Kanye West, are terrific.)"
Even reviewers who were not fans of the movie, still liked James' performance. Stephanie Zacharek of the Village Voice said, "James, in particular, hams it up and has a blast â he's a kick to watch."
Director Judd Apatow, narrating a scene for the New York Times, said LeBron was a "ridiculosly good actor" and "it didn't really make sense how comfortable he was."
Trainwreck opened with $30.2 million over the weekend.
