COLUMBUS — The Columbus Crew has signed goalkeeper Daniel Withrow, the club announced on Thursday. The Black & Gold selected the Rochester Hills, Mich. native 28th overall in the second round of the 2013 MLS Supplemental Draft on January 22. Per Major League Soccer and club policy, terms of the contract were not disclosed.
“Daniel worked hard throughout our preseason camp to earn his place on the roster, and we’re pleased to welcome him to the club,” said Crew Technical Director Brian Bliss. “Daniel’s signing gives us a full 30-man roster heading into the second match of the season, and we’re excited about the group we’ve put together.”
The 2012 Conference USA Co-Player of the Year, Withrow recorded a career-high nine shutouts in his senior season with the Marshall Thundering Herd. In 67 appearances in net over four years, Withrow recorded 21 clean sheets. The 22-year-old was named to the All-Conference USA First Team three times, winning the conference’s Defender of the Year Award in 2010.
Withrow joined the Black & Gold in preseason camp in Brandenton, Fla. in late January and made three appearances in two matches and one scrimmage. The Crew opened the 2013 season with a 3-0 win at Chivas USA on March 2 and remains on the road this week through Saturday, March 9 at Vancouver Whitecaps FC (7:30 p.m. ET / FOX Sports Ohio).
