The Coyotes selected right wing Henrik Samuelsson with their first-round pick, the 27th overall selection, in the 2012 NHL draft Friday in Pittsburgh, Pa.
Samuelsson, a native of Scottsdale, Ariz., whose father, Ulf, was an associate head coach for the Coyotes under Wayne Gretzky, registered seven goals and 16 assists in 28 games with Edmonton of the Western Hockey League last season. The 6-foot-2, 211-pounder was named to the 2012 Memorial Cup
all-tournament team after leading the Oil Kings in scoring with two
goals and three assists en route to the WHL championship.
Samuelsson, 18, also skated in 16 games with Modo Jr. and 15 games with Modo of the Swedish Elite League, tallying four goals and seven assists between the two clubs. In 2011, he had 10 points for Team USA at the U-17 World Hockey Challenge, leading to an invitation to USA Hockey's National Junior Evaluation Camp, which will be held Aug. 4-11 in Lake Placid, N.Y.
Samuelsson's brother, Philip, was drafted 61st overall in 2009 by the Penguins.
