The Coyotes on Thursday recalled defenseman Brandon Gormley and assigned forward Tim Kennedy to the Portland Pirates, the team's American Hockey League affiliate.

The 21-year-old Gormley has registered five assists in seven games with the Pirates this season, leading all Portland defensemen in scoring. The 6-foot-2, 196-pounder also appeared in 68 games with Portland last season, totaling five goals and 24 assists. He was the Coyotes' first-round selection at No. 13 overall in the 2010 draft.

The Coyotes' roster has been a defenseman short since Rusty Klesla suffered a lower-body injury last week.

Kennedy has played in six games with the Coyotes this season, recording three assists. He also has appeared in one game with the Pirates. The 27-year-old has 13 goals and 21 assists in 131 NHL games in his career.
