IRVING, Texas – Dallas Cowboys defensive lineman Josh Brent's bond hearing was originally scheduled for Friday morning but has been delayed by a month – postponing the possibility that he will be jailed and have his bond revoked for allegedly failed a drug test while awaiting trial on intoxication manslaughter charges. Those charges result from being the driver in a one-car crash that killed his teammate, Jerry Brown.
Brent's rescheduled court date is July 19, when prosecutors will once again attempt to argue that he failed a drug test for marijuana – a clear violation of the court's order – and that his bond should be revoked and he should be jailed until his September manslaughter trial.
Brent's $100,000 bond comes with conditions that include wearing a SCRAM alcohol monitor and submitting to drug testing.
On Dec. 8, 2012, the eve of the Cowboys' departure for a road game, Brent – who'd moved into a starting role on the Dallas defensive line -- was intoxicated when he flipped his 2007 Mercedes Benz with Brown inside. Brown died at the scene. The arrest report showed Brent's blood-alcohol level to be 0.189, more than twice the legal limit.
The Cowboys have yet to officially cut ties with Brent, who could face anywhere from probation to 20 years in prison if found guilty and who also likely will face a suspension from the NFL.
