Cowboys' Hatcher: Our team needs leader

The Cowboys have as much talent as any team in the NFL.

But the one thing that many have believed for years is that they lack a true leader to carry this team.

And now, according to at least one player, it's not just the critics who believe this anymore.

Dallas Cowboys defensive end Jason Hatcher was on the Ben and Skin Show on KESN-FM in Dallas on Friday and was asked who the leader of this team is.

“Dude, I've got to be honest with you: That’s a good question,” Hatcher said. “I really don’t know. It’s just another thing we really need…. We don’t have that. We’ve got the talent. We’ve got everything we need [except] a Ray Lewis. When Ray Lewis speaks, everybody listens to him. A guy like that, we really don’t got that. I think we definitely need somebody like that."

A shockingly honest answer, one that shouldn't sit well with stars such as Tony Romo and DeMarcus Ware.  But at the end of the day, the Cowboys finished below expectations again.

Teams that finish 8-8 need players to step and and lead a team, especially one that has as much talent on both sides of the ball as Dallas does.

“You’ve got to have somebody hold you accountable," Hatcher said. "With a leader like [Lewis], everybody is accountable and guys aren’t doing their own thing. [Lewis] is in there. Everybody’s going in one direction. So once you have that, you’ll be good. We’re still looking for it.”

The Cowboys are well under the salary cap this off-season and Jerry Jones has stated that they will spend money to improve the team.  With plenty of cap space and free agency right around the corner, the Cowboys might have a shot at finding their own "Ray Lewis" to help take this team to the next level.
