Cowboys' Durant cleared for offseason workouts after biceps injury

Justin Durant has been cleared to participate in the offseason program – it's just a matter of whose program that will be.

Durant tweeted Wednesday morning that he had been cleared to participate in offseason workouts, just four months removed from tearing his biceps on Oct. 28.

"Cleared to fully participate in offseason workouts...making progress mane," Durant said via his Twitter account.

It's big news for Durant, but it's also an interesting development for the Cowboys' approaching free agency window. Durant is one of three free agent linebackers with starting experience on the Dallas roster, and his availability may make him all the more appealing to re-sign for 2015.

The eight-year veteran was an integral part of the Dallas defense in the first half of 2014, making 50 stops in six games for a linebacking corps that was missing Sean Lee. It was easily the best stretch of Durant's two-year stay in Dallas – which made it all the more painful for the Cowboys when he tore his bicep in the Week 8 loss to the Redskins.

How the Cowboys negotiate with their free agent linebackers – Durant, Bruce Carter and Rolando McClain – is one of the most interesting aspects of their offseason. Durant will turn 30 during the 2015 season, and he has also had injury issues during both of his seasons with the team. Those things might be cause for concern, though they also might make him the most affordable of the three.

Sean Lee, who missed all of 2014 with a torn ACL, is also expected to be ready for the offseason program. Should the Cowboys decide to bring Durant back, he gives them a versatile option alongside Lee and Anthony Hitchens. Durant has spent time at all three linebacker spots during his stay at Valley Ranch.
