The Cowboys continue to support nose tackle Josh Brent despite his arrest for intoxication manslaughter in the death of a teammate.
Brent was the driver in a one-car wreck early Saturday morning that resulted in the death of practice squad member Jerry Brown.
On Monday, Brent was at the team's Valley Ranch practice facility. Unless he is suspended by the NFL and barred from the facility, head coach Jason Garrett said Brent will continue to be welcome around the team.
"We're going to support Josh 100 percent in every way that we can," Garrett said. "Our players will do that, coaches will do that, our organization will do that."
Cowboys players and staff will attend a private memorial for Brown on Tuesday. Brent, who was a college teammate of Brown's, is expected to attend.
As for Brent's status with the team, that remains undetermined. As of Monday, he was still on the active roster, although it's unlikely he will play the rest of the season considering the seriousness of the charge against him.
"This thing only happened a couple of days ago," Garrett said. "I'm sure you guys can understand the situation that he's in, and how he feels about the situation. Again, we're trying to help him get through today. It's a very, very difficult and challenging situation for him."
The Cowboys could suspend Brent or wait for the league to make a move in order to clear a roster spot.
Although Brent walked out of jail after making bond, he did sustain injuries in the crash, which also could affect his status.
On Monday, though, the concern was for Brent's emotional health.
"I did get a chance to visit with him," Garrett said. "He was obviously very distraught about the situation. It's a day-by-day situation. We're all going to try to help him get through it."
Asked what he told Brent, Garrett said, "Just that we all love him and we're going to be here for him."
The Cowboys are also grieving for Brown, the undrafted free agent linebacker who was doing his best to make an impression on the scout team. The Cowboys had Brown's jersey on their bench Sunday in Cincinnati, and several players broke down talking about their deceased teammate after a dramatic, 20-19 win.
Garrett spoke affectionately of Brown after the game, and again during Monday's press conference.
Garrett said he sought the help of several veteran players on how to handle the tragedy, including how to deal with Brent.
"There's a lot of love on this team," Garrett said. "There's a lot of love for the young man who passed away. There's a lot of love for Josh Brent."
