IRVING, Texas -- Cowboys starting cornerback Morris Claiborne had to walk before he could run. He has to run before he can practice. Dallas would like to see him practice before he plays.

Wednesday at Valley Ranch marked an advancement to the second stage of his 'day-to-day' recovery from his balky knee.

Claiborne says he's advanced to running for the first time since he jammed his left knee in practice Aug. 6.

Claiborne isn't likely to play this weekend in the preseason meeting with the Bengals. But the second-year standout said he’s confident he'll be ready to play in the Cowboys’ season opener Sept. 8 against the Giants.

"We’ll see where he is physically," coach Jason Garrett said. "He needs to practice, he needs to play. But ... (we) may go into a game where not as much work as you would like him to have."
