coors field review rockies ballpark

Don't get me wrong: Coors Field, the actual building, is one of the best ballparks that's ever been built.

Wait, I'll go even further ... Coors Field might forever be the best ballpark built after 1920. I say that because most of our "modern" ballparks have serious flaws, while Coors is essentially flawless. It was built after the early lessons of retro ballpark construction had been learned, and before the craze for luxury drinking clubs poisoned so many of our recent stadiums (see Nationals Park, both New York ballparks, et al).

I've ranked my favorite ballparks at some point, but here's a thumbnail of my current thinking:

1. Fenway
2. Wrigley
3. Dodger
4. Coors
5. Mays/McCovey

I gotta say, though ... the Rockies are screwing up their ballpark experience with cheap minor-league "entertainment". Now they've got the cute girls throwing t-shirts, and they've got the cute girl running silly quiz shows between innings, and they've got a sponsored race on the field between characters dressed as dental-health tools. And of course the volume's so loud on the p.a. system that it's difficult to have a friendly conversation with your neighbor (and yes, my hearing's still perfectly fine, thanks for asking).

The good news is that a generous owner can change all this, while the great building will endure for some decades more.
