Cody Miller posts world leading time in 200 breaststroke
ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) Cody Miller won his second gold medal at the Arena Pro Swim Series Orlando in impressive fashion on Friday, taking the 200-meter breaststroke with the fastest time in the world this season.
Miller, 23, posted a personal best time of 2 minutes, 10.28 seconds, though it was just shy of his goal of breaking 2:10. His previous best was 2:10.99 at the 2013 U.S. Open. Miller was 3 seconds clear of the field.
The Las Vegas native won the 100 breaststroke on Thursday in 59.92, giving him the No. 2 and No. 3 times in the world behind Adam Peaty of Great Britain.
Canadian Audrey Lacroix also picked up her second gold in the butterfly, taking the 200 in 2:10.37. She won the 100 on the opening day of the three-day meet at the North Florida YMCA Aquatic Center.
Arianna Vanderpool-Wallace, a two-time Olympian from the Bahamas, had an impressive 50 freestyle, posting a 24.85, good for fifth in the world.
There was an upset in the men's 100 backstroke when Matt Grevers, who posted the No. 2 time in the world at Grand Prix Austin, Texas meet last month, finished third behind Junya Koga and Arkady Vyatchanin. Koga, from Japan, was timed in 53.97 and Vyatchanin, who has defected from Russia to Serbia, was 54.23. Grevers, a six-time Olympic medalist from Illinois finished at 53.29. He went 53.27 in Austin.
The women's 100 backstroke ended in a rare tie, with Denmark's Mie Nielsen and Canada's Dominique Bouchard touching in 1:00.55, the No. 5 time in the world this year.
In the women's 200 breaststroke, Molly Harris had a personal best of 2:26.80, good for seventh in the world.
Two-time Olympian Elizabeth Beisel from Rhode Island and the University of Florida had an impressive closing 100 meters to pull away from Hannah Miley in the 400 freestyle in 4:10.99. Beisel had sat out with a groin injury since winning the 400 freestyle at last month's Grand Prix stop in Austin
Miley, a double winner on Friday in the 200 freestyle and 400 individual medley and swimming her third final of the night, finished in 4:12.63. Earlier the British Olympian was third in the 200 breaststroke and fourth in the 200 butterfly.
In the men's 400, Michael McBroom from The Woodlands, Texas, closed with a 27.83 to pass Conor Dwyer of Evanston, Illinois, touching in 3:50.38. Dwyer, whose last leg was a second slow, went 3:50.43.
Viktor Bromer of Denmark won the 200 butterfly in 1:57.32 and Brazilian Bruno Fratus, who won Austin in a world-best 21.91, won the 50 free in 22.34.
