KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) The Chiefs have released linebacker Bryan Kehl to create a roster space that coach Romeo Crennel plans to fill later this week.

Crennel announced the move Wednesday, saying: "He was expendable, so I expended him."

Kehl has played in 62 games over four-plus seasons with the Chiefs, New York Giants and St. Louis Rams. He played in 14 games and started once last season for St. Louis, and had been active in three games for Kansas City after getting signed midway through this season.

Crennel wouldn't say how he plans to use the open roster spot. It may depend on the Chiefs' injury situation, particularly along the offensive line.
