Chicago Fire sign David Accam as Designated Player
David Accam has joined the Chicago Fire as a designated player, the team announced Friday.
Coming from Swedish club Helsingborgs, the Ghanaian striker becomes the second African forward the Fire have signed from Sweden this offseason after Nigerian striker Kennedy Igboananike's signing was made official earlier this month.
"I'm really excited to be a part of MLS and the Chicago Fire," Accam said in a news release. "The commitment that the Fire showed me was the main reason I chose Chicago over other offers that I had. I would also like to thank the coach Frank Yallop and the owner Andrew Hauptman for believing in me and giving me the opportunity to play for the Fire. I cannot wait to repay their faith."
The 24-year-old scored 17 times in 25 Allsvenskan appearances in 2014 after putting together a 10-goal campaign the year before. His career started when was spotted by a scout his native Accra and joined the Right to Dream Academy. He later went to England to study and played lower-league football while there before joining the third-tier in Sweden thanks to connections with the English manager Graham Potter.
