SAN DIEGO (AP) -- The San Diego Chargers have taken Keenan Allen, California's all-time leading wide receiver, with the 76th pick overall in the NFL draft.

The pick was unexpected, but certainly upgrades the position. He had 61 catches for 737 yards and six touchdowns last year for the Golden Bears, when he missed the final three games with a knee injury. He finished as Cal's all-time leading receiver with 205 catches in three seasons. His 2,570 career yards were third in school history.

Danario Alexander signed his contract tender with the Chargers on Thursday. Although he filled in nicely after his midseason acquisition, he has been slowed by injuries in his career. Malcom Floyd also is injury prone.

Last year's two big free agent acquisitions, Robert Meachem and Eddie Royal, underperformed.
