NEW YORK (AP) Matthew Centrowitz defended his title in the Wanamaker Mile at the 109th Millrose Games.
Centrowitz won the indoor meet's signature event for the third time Saturday, making his move with a lap to go to beat New Zealand's Nick Willis.
His time of 3 minutes, 50.63 seconds was a meet record. This is the fifth year that Millrose has been held at the Armory and its faster track.
Centrowitz had been sick this week and considered dropping out of the race. He ran less aggressively than he would have otherwise and didn't even pay attention his splits. Then he looked up at the scoreboard to see he'd run the fastest time of his three Wanamaker wins.
