CLEVELAND (AP) -- The Cleveland Cavaliers say their season opener against Washington will be played as scheduled.
Team spokesman Tad Carper said the NBA team has been in contact Tuesday with city officials. The team is closely monitoring weather conditions and has contingency plans in place in case things change. Like so many other cities, Cleveland was slammed by rain and high winds from superstorm Sandy, which uprooted trees, cut power to hundreds of thousands and closed schools.
About 260,000 homes and businesses in Ohio remain without power -- the majority in the Cleveland area. A low-lying section of Interstate 90 east of downtown was shut down because waves from Lake Erie were crashing over barriers and onto the roadway.
The Wizards arrived in Cleveland on Monday and practiced at Quicken Loans Arena.
