INDEPENDENCE, Ohio (AP) -- The Cleveland Cavaliers have selected Russian guard Sergey Karasev with the No. 19 overall pick in the NBA draft.
The Cavs had been targeting Karasev for some time and thought they might have to trade up to get the 19-year-old, who played on the Russian Olympic team last summer at the London Games. A left-handed shooter, the 6-foot-8 Karasev averaged 18.7 points, 5.3 rebounds and 2.3 assists last season for BC Triumph.
It is believed Karasev intends to come to the U.S. and play this season.
Earlier, the Cavs selected UNLV forward Anthony Bennett with the No. 1 overall pick, a surprising selection.
Cleveland also has two second-round picks -- Nos. 31 and 33 -- but the team has been trying to package them in a trade.
