Cartwright earns Big Sky honor with rescue effort
OGDEN, Utah -- Northern Arizona junior quarterback Chase Cartwright has been named the Big Sky Conference Co-Offensive Player of the Week. Cartwright, who shared the weekly honor with Idaho State wide receiver Luke Austin, is the first Lumberjack offensive player to win the award this season.
With NAU trailing by 17 points with eight minutes left in the third quarter, the Chandler native made his first appearance of the season. Eight plays later Cartwright connected with Nick Cole for a 42-yard touchdown pass. On NAU's next drive, Cartwright threw a 14-yard touchdown pass to Jesse Brantley.
Cartwright found R.J. Rickert in the end zone for a 4-yard touchdown pass in the fourth quarter as NAU wiped out the deficit and came away with a 39-38 win on the road.
Cartwright completed 16 of 19 passes for 208 yards and three touchdowns with no interceptions.
NAU senior running back Zach Bauman was also singled out for his play, being named the FCS National Running Back Performer of the Week after accumulating 217 yards (196 rushing, 21 receiving) and two touchdowns in the Lumberjacks' victory.
The Lumberjacks (4-2, 2-1 Big Sky) return to action at 4 p.m. Saturday against Idaho State (3-3, 1-2) with their Homecoming game at the Walkup Skydome. NAU is ranked 19th this week in The Sports Network Poll, 21st in the FCS Coaches Poll and 17th in the College Sports Madness Poll.
