TEMPE, Ariz. -- Arizona State point guard Jahii Carson, the Pac-12 co-freshman of the year, has submitted paperwork to the NBA requesting a preliminary evaluation of his draft status.
The request is the first step in the process toward declaring for the draft but is non-binding.
Carson said he intends to make a decision within the next two weeks.
“At this time my family and I decided that it was in our best interest to receive an evaluation from NBA personnel through the proper channels," he said in a statement released by ASU. "I am submitting paperwork through Arizona State to the NBA and will use the next two weeks to make a decision. We look forward to the opportunity to receive feedback from people with great knowledge on the subject, and once we evaluate our situation will make an educated decision.”
ASU head coach Herb Sendek said Carson's decision was a logical one following his first season with the Sun Devils, in which he ranked among the Pac-12's top five in scoring (18.5 points per game) and assists (5.1).
Carson, only 5-feet-10, is a dynamic open-court player but is regarded as a still-developing talent who might not quite be NBA ready in all facets of the game, including his outside shot.
“With his play this year, there is no surprise here," Sendek said. "We look forward to working with him on this just like we do every day on the court, in the film room or in the weight room.”
