ST. LOUIS (AP) The St. Louis Cardinals recalled right-hander Carlos Martinez from Triple-A Memphis to make his first career start Thursday night against the Dodgers.

The Cardinals also recalled left-hander Sam Freeman from Memphis, and optioned right-handed reliever Keith Butler and first baseman/outfielder Brock Peterson to that team.

It's the third call-up this season for the 21-year-old Martinez, a top pitching prospect who has made 10 relief appearances totaling 11 1/3 innings with 11 strikeouts. Martinez is 4-2 with a 1.76 ERA in 10 starts at Memphis and was the organization's minor league pitcher of the month for June.

He'll be the fifth rookie pitcher to start for St. Louis this season.
