Cardinals lose Maness to Tommy John surgery
ST. LOUIS -- The St. Louis Cardinals' bullpen continues to be plagued by injuries. The latest victim: Seth Maness, who will be out for a while.
The Cardinals announced Tuesday morning that they had placed the right-hander on the 15-day disabled list with a right elbow strain, but by later in the afternoon it was reported by Jenifer Langosch of mlb.com that Maness would be undergoing Tommy John surgery, which will end his season and likely cost him a good chunk of the 2017 season.

Maness, who missed time while on the disabled list from May 13-June 18 with right elbow inflammation, is 2-2 with a 3.41 ERA in 29 relief appearances this season. He had a career-best streak of 14 1/3 scoreless innings over 11 appearances from July 9-August 12.
In a corresponding move, the team recalled right-hander Sam Tuivailala from Triple-A Memphis.
Tuivailala, who ranks tied for third in the Pacific Coast League with 17 saves, is joining the Cardinals for the second time this season. He allowed three runs over three innings with three strikeouts in four relief appearances from July 3-26. Tuivailala, 23, is 3-2 with a 5.44 ERA, 66 strikeouts and 19 walks in 39 games for Memphis.
