Cardinals cut Maness loose with non-tender

Published Dec. 9, 2016 12:40 p.m. ET

Right-hander Seth Maness, the king of the double-play ball for much of his young St. Louis Cardinals career, will be looking for a new team with which to ply that trade.

The Cardinals announced Monday that they did not tender a 2017 contract to Maness, making the reliever a free agent.

The move leaves St. Louis' major league roster at 39 players heading into next week's Winter Meetings.

Maness, 28, was drafted by the Cardinals in 2011 and made his big-league debut in 2013, helping the Cardinals to a National League pennant and World Series appearance. He owns a career mark of 17-10 with a 3.19 ERA in 244 career games (all as a reliever).

Maness endured an injury-shortened 2016 season that led to right elbow surgery in August. He was 2-2 with a 3.41 ERA in 29 games after having surpassed 70 games in both 2014 and 2015.
