Campuzano on awkward weigh-in incident: 'You gotta own what you have'
DALLAS -- Think Will Campuzano is embarrassed about his, uhh, showing during weigh-ins before his last fight? Hardly.
Campuzano was wearing small, tight briefs and when he squared off with opponent Sergio Pettis, there seemed to be something a little off below the belt. Or, maybe in this case, something on. The photos went viral for all the wrong reasons and Campuzano became the UFC fighter who may or may not have had an erection during weigh-ins.
"You gotta own what you have, buddy," he said with a smile when asked about it Wednesday at the UFC 171 workouts at Gilley's Dallas.
(fast forward to 6:00 and see for yourself)
Campuzano said it has happened to him before and he doesn't plan on changing his wardrobe choice Friday for the weigh-ins in advance of his fight Saturday with Justin Scoggins.
"I like wearing bikini-style underwear and that's that," said Campuzano, who is from the Dallas area.
The issue arises, Campuzano said, when he doesn't cut any weight. The fight with Pettis at UFC 167 in November was contested at 135 pounds. Campuzano has fought at 125 the last three years. He also came into the Pettis fight on short notice -- he was signed by the UFC when Vaughan Lee got injured and had to withdraw from the Pettis bout -- and said he was completely out of shape.
"It's happened to me before," Campuzano said.
Will it again? We won't know until Friday. Scoggins, though, has nothing to fear. Pettis was not psyched out -- he ended up beat Campuzano by decision.
