PADRES 7, DODGERS 5
GLENDALE, Ariz. -- Zack Greinke was hit hard in his second spring training appearance, allowing three doubles and a triple over three innings Friday as a Los Angeles Dodgers' split squad lost to the San Diego Padres 7-5.
After pitching two scoreless innings against the Chicago White Sox in his first game after signing a $147 million, six-year contract, Greinke allowed two runs and five hits, avoiding more runs when a runner was thrown out at the plate in the first and he escaped a bases-loaded, no-out jam in the third.
Greinke began by allowing consecutive doubles to his first two batters, Everth Cabrera and Chris Denorfia. Chase Headley followed with a single to right, but Denorfia was thrown out at the plate on first baseman Adrian Gonzalez's relay from Jerry Hairston Jr.
Nick Hundley doubled leading off the third, and Jonathan Galvez followed with a triple. Cabrera walked and stole second, and a walk to Denorfia loaded the bases. Chase Headley then grounded to Gonzalez, who threw home for the forceout, and Greinke got Yonder Alonso to ground into a 1-2-3 double play.
The Dodgers' Matt Kemp, recovering from left shoulder surgery on Oct. 5, made his first spring training appearance and was 0 for 2 with a groundout and a called strikeout.
ROCKIES 5, BREWERS 2
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. -- Carlos Gonzalez drove in his first three runs with a homer and double, leading the Colorado Rockies over the Milwaukee Brewers 5-2 on Friday.
Gonzalez was 2 for 9 going into the game. He lined a two-run double in the third inning and homered off Ariel Pena in the fifth.
The All-Star outfielder will play one more game with Colorado before joining Team Venezuela for the World Baseball Classic.
The Rockies turned an unusual double play to end the fifth. With Norichika Aoki on first, Jean Segura singled. Right fielder Charlie Blackmon hit cutoff man Reid Brignac in the middle of the diamond, and he threw behind Segura for the out at first. Aoki thought it was the third out and strayed off the bag, and was picked off second.
ROYALS 3, REDS 2
SURPRISE, Ariz. -- Ervin Santana pitched a pair of scoreless innings in his Royals debut, and Brett Hayes' eighth-inning homer helped Kansas City to a 3-2 victory over the Cincinnati Reds on Friday.
Chris Getz also homered for the Royals, who improved to 7-0-1 and remain the only team without a spring training loss. Salvador Perez drove in a run and also threw out two base runners.
Mat Latos went two scoreless innings for Cincinnati in his first spring start. Backup catcher Devin Mesoraco and reserve outfielder Kristopher Negron hit solo homers.
Santana, who was acquired from the Angels in a November trade, got off to a good start for Kansas City by retiring the side on six pitches in the first inning. He escaped a jam in the second when he struck out Zack Cozart to leave runners on second and third.
MARINERS 8, RANGERS 6
PEORIA, Ariz. -- Jason Bay, Michael Morse, Michael Saunders and Carlos Peguero homered Friday and the Seattle Mariners beat the Texas Rangers 8-6.
The Mariners lead the majors in homers this spring. They have connected for 18 in eight games.
Texas shortstop Elvis Andrus doubled and walked in his return to the lineup after a bizarre setback. He was scratched the previous day with what the team called "sensitivity in his left arm" -- apparently caused by an elaborate tattoo.
Andrus will now join Team Venezuela for the World Baseball Classic.
Mitch Moreland hit a two-run homer for Texas.
GIANTS 13, ATHLETICS 9
PHOENIX -- Jarrod Parker pitched two scoreless innings in his first spring start, a 13-9 loss to the San Francisco Giants on Friday.
Brandon Belt had three hits and drove in a run for the Giants, who scored seven times in sixth inning against reliever Travis Blackley.
Chris Young, in his first appearance in a week, added two hits for the Athletics.
Giants starter Madison Bumgarner went 1 2-3 innings, allowing a run on three hits. He walked two and struck out two.
Parker needed just 22 pitches, 18 for strikes, to get through his stint. If not for Marco Scutaro, who battled Parker through a nine-pitch at-bat, he would have been even more efficient.
WHITE SOX 9, INDIANS 7
GOODYEAR, Ariz. -- Chris Sale struck out three over 2 1-3 scoreless innings in his spring training debut Friday as the Chicago White Sox lost to the Cleveland Indians 9-7.
Sale, a 17-game winner last year, allowed two hits -- both singles -- struck out one and walked none.
Chicago took a 4-0 lead against Justin Masterson, Cleveland's opening-day starter, who gave up six hits in 2 2-3 innings. Dayan Viciedo homered leading off the second and, two batters later, Brent Morel hit a two-run drive. Hector Gimenez added an RBI single in the third.
Cleveland rallied on a pair of three-run homers. Matt Carson connected off Erik Johnson in the fourth for his third home run of the exhibition season, and Mike McDade went deep against loser Leyson Septimo in the sixth.
David Huff won despite giving up Marcus Semien's three-run homer in the sixth.
DIAMONDBACKS 6, CUBS 2
MESA, Ariz. -- Cubs right-hander Jeff Samardzija, a candidate to start opening day at Pittsburgh, pitched out of enough trouble to get through three innings with the lead in Chicago's 6-2 loss to the Arizona Diamondbacks on Friday.
Samardzija walked three, including two when he loaded the bases with none out in the second inning, made his second spring start and became the first Cubs pitcher to get through three innings.
