The Cleveland Indians have reached an agreement with shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera on a two-year contract extension that will pay him $16.5 million over the 2013 and 2014 seasons, MLB.com reported Sunday.
The Indians have not yet announced the signing.
The Indians tried to sign Cabrera to a multiyear contract during the offseason, but ended up signing him to a one-year, $4.55 million deal to avoid arbitration. Without the extension, Cabrera would have been eligible to become a free agent after the 2013 season.
Cabrera, 26, hit .273 with 25 home runs and 92 RBIs in 2011. He was a starter in the All-Star Game and set a franchise record for home runs by a shortstop.
