Buxton, Sano among Twins spring training invites
MINNEAPOLIS -- The Minnesota Twins' list of spring training invites includes the organization's top two prospects.
The team announced Thursday that outfielder Byron Buxton and third baseman Miguel Sano are among the 63 players invited to the major league camp in Fort Myers, Fla. It's the first invite to the team's major league camp for both players. Also joining them will be right-hander Alex Meyer, one of Minnesota's top pitching prospects.
Buxton garnered numerous minor league awards last year as he climbed from Low-A Cedar Rapids to High-A Fort Myers. He was named Baseball America's Minor League Player of the Year after batting a combined .334 with 12 home runs, 18 triples and 55 stolen bases in 125 games. Sano started the 2013 season in Fort Myers before he was promoted to Double-A New Britain. The 20-year-old Dominican Republic native batted .280 with 35 home runs and 103 RBI last year.
Also of note among the 23 non-roster invitees are former Twins Jason Kubel and Jason Bartlett, both of whom were signed as free agents this winter. Kubel was an outfielder with Minnesota from 2004-2011, while Bartlett roamed the Twins' infield from 2004-07.
Pitchers and catchers report to Fort Myers on Feb. 16, with the first full team workout taking place on Feb. 22.
