COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Ohio State announced a crowd of 99,391 for its spring game Saturday, its biggest crowd ever to see a spring football game and an unofficial college record.

Defending a national title has its privileges.

Sun and a high temperature of 75 helped. The day started with an 11 a.m. lacrosse game, and by the time the football game started at a little before 2 p.m., Ohio Stadium looked pretty close to full. Capacity for Ohio Stadium is 104,944. Tickets for the general public were $5 each, with students getting in free.

Most Buckeyes stars made only cameo appearances, but quarterback Cardale Jones was one of two available scholarship quarterbacks. Before the game, Ohio State coach Urban Meyer pitted Jones against redshirt freshman quarterback Stephen Collier in a circle drill, much to the delight of the crowd.

Jones wore a non-contact black jersey but leveled roommate Tyvis Powell along the east sideline after Powell intercepted a Jones pass in the first quarter. Fellow quarterbacks Braxton Miller and J.T. Barrett wore headsets and stood behind the offense for both the Scarlet and Gray teams.
