The preseason edition of the USA Today coaches poll was released on Thursday, and the Ohio State Buckeyes will begin the season ranked No. 2.
Not surprisingly, Alabama was the overwhelming choice at No. 1 with 58 first-place votes. Ohio State received three first-place votes.
Because they were ineligible for the postseason last year, the Buckeyes were ineligible for the coaches poll.
Rounding out the top five were Oregon at No. 3, Stanford at No. 4 and Georgia at No. 5. Alabama had 1,545 voting points, Ohio State had 1,427 and Oregon had 1,397.
The second-highest ranked Big Ten team was Michigan at No. 17. The SEC had five of the top 10 and six total in the top 25.
No other Ohio teams cracked the initial top 25. Ohio (40th), Cincinnati (43rd), Kent State (45th) and Toledo (53rd) received votes.
