Buckeyes benefit from strange plays at Penn State

After Mother Nature hindered Ohio State from getting to State College for Wednesday night's game against Penn State, the Buckeyes got an assist from an odd foul call on the Nittany Lions.

Ross Travis had a clear path to basket and appeared to bring the home team within one point with a breakaway dunk, but it was waved off because of a foul call against Penn State star D.J. Newbill, who appeared initially to cross paths with Ohio State center Amir Williams well behind the play.

Given the situation, a whistle there seemed questionable because neither team gained an advantage from any contact that may have occurred, but the Big Ten Network's replay from another angle revealed the only contact appeared to be initiated by Williams.

Penn State head coach Pat Chambers, who has already publicly expressed his frustration with what he views as a lack of respect from officials, was understandably upset about the call, but he avoided receiving a technical.

His team took a 30-29 lead into the locker room despite losing those two points on the Travis dunk that wasn't and this bizarre play by Ohio State's Sam Thompson that led to two points for the Buckeyes.

After a back-and-forth first few minutes of the second half, Ohio State pulled away for a 77-67 victory.
