BEREA -- The Brandon Weeden and Jason Campbell eras are over in Cleveland.
The Browns officially parted ways with both quarterbacks within a 30-minute timespan. Weeden, 30, was a first-round pick in 2012 (22nd overall) and let go after just two seasons.
"First and foremost, the Browns would like to thank Brandon and his agent for being true professionals," GM Ray Farmer announced in a press release. "The circumstances in which he found himself were not easy for him or the team. After discussions with Brandon and his agent, we'd like to give him the ability to pursue other opportunities."
Weeden started 20 games in his career and was 438-of-784 for 5,116 yards with 23 touchdowns and 26 interceptions. His rating in that period was 71.8. He was 5-15 as a starter for the Browns.
In 2013, Weeden started five games and was 141-of-267 for 1,731 yards with 9 touchdowns and 9 interceptions and a rating of 70.3. The Browns lost all five games that he started, but did defeat the Bills when Weeden replaced the injured Brian Hoyer.
Weeden set a Browns rookie record in 2012 with 3,385 passing yards and had three 300-yard passing games in 2012. His best game in 2013 was when he threw for 370 yards with three touchdowns and two interceptions in a loss to the Jaguars this year.
Shortly after the release of Weeden, the Browns sent out another release saying goodbye to Campbell.
"We appreciate Jason's contributions to the Browns in 2013," Farmer said in the release. "He's a respected veteran player in this league. We felt like at this time, early in the free-agency period, we would give him a better opportunity to move forward. We wish Jason the best in his future endeavors."
Campbell's release was expected as he was due a roster bonus of $250,000 on Thursday.
Campbell, 32, started eight games for the Browns and was 180-of-317 for 2,015 yards with 11 touchdowns and eight interceptions. His rating was 76.9. Campbell's record as a starter for the Browns was 1-7 in 2013.
The nine-year veteran was a former first-round draft choice of the Redskins. With the release of Weeden and Campbell, the Browns have just two quarterbacks on the roster -- Hoyer and Alex Tanney.
