BEREA, Ohio (AP) -- Wide receiver Carlton Mitchell has been released by the Cleveland Browns, who trimmed their roster to 80.

Mitchell appeared in 11 games last season. He caught three passes for 31 yards and the Browns had high hopes for the 24-year-old. However, after Cleveland selected Travis Benjamin in April's draft and then picked Josh Gordon in the supplemental draft, it became apparent Mitchell's days were numbers. It didn't help that he was slowed by a leg injury in training camp.

The 6-foot-3, 215-pound Mitchell was drafted by the Browns in the sixth round in 2010. He played in five games as a rookie but did not catch a pass.

He was the most notable player released Sunday, one day before the Browns are required to get down to 75 players.
