MILWAUKEE — In hopes of bolstering the team's offense, especially in the infield, the Brewers claimed infielder Cody Ransom off waivers from Arizona and optioned infielder Edwin Maysonet to Triple-A Nashville.
The move also allowed the team to move shortstop Alex Gonzalez, who is out for the season with a torn ACL, to the 60-day disabled list.
Ransom, 36, had been quite successful with Arizona in 17 games of action this season, batting .269 in 58 plate appearances. He also adds a bit more power to the lineup than Maysonet, already having accounted for four home runs and 13 RBI in 2012.
"He'll be put in there at shortstop," Brewers manager Ron Roenicke said of Ransom on Wednesday. "(Cesar Izturis) has been playing almost everyday. What it gives us, it gives us a little more offense. He's a very good hitter. I haven't seen him play shortstop for a little while … but he used to be a very good defender."
Ransom has never played a full season in the major leagues, having played in the most games (78) during the 2004 season.
The move could be the first of many for the Brewers, depending on the status of pitcher Marco Estrada, who strained either his right quad or right hip flexor during Wednesday's game. Roenicke also mentioned before Wednesday's game that he and other Brewers officials have talked about the possibility of making a few minor moves in the coming weeks.
