Brewers officially recall Jungmann, option Sardinas to Triple-A
The Milwaukee Brewers have recalled right-hander Taylor Jungmann from Triple-A Colorado Springs and optioned infielder Luis Sardinas back to the Sky Sox.
Jungmann will make his major-league debut against the Pittsburgh Pirates on Tuesday. He has been on the taxi squad since Milwaukee announced over the weekend the former first-round pick would start.
In 11 appearances and nine starts this season for Colorado Springs, Jungmann is 2-3 with a 6.37 ERA. He has a 3.92 ERA over his last three Triple-A starts.
Jungmann had a strong 2014 in Milwaukee's minor-league system, posting a 2.77 ERA in nine starts in Double-A before going 8-6 with a 3.98 ERA in 19 games at Triple-A.
Picked No. 12 overall out of the University of Texas in 2011, Jungmann will make his major-league debut at 25 years old. The last first-round pick of the Brewers to play for Milwaukee was Jeremy Jeffress, who was drafted in 2006.
Being the lone player in the second-base mix to have minor-league options left hurt Sardinas. The 22-year-old is hitting .221 with one extra-base hit in 71 plate appearances over 20 games with the Brewers.
Sardinas was recalled in mid-May when starting shortstop Jean Segura went on the disabled list with a fractured finger. Segura has regained the starting job at shortstop, which relegated Sardinas to a platoon at second base with Hector Gomez and Hernan Perez.
