The Milwaukee Brewers claimed catcher Juan Centeno off waivers from the New York Mets on Friday, presumably adding minor-league depth to the position.
Centeno spent the majority of his time playing for Double-A Binghamton and Triple-A Las Vegas last season, hitting .289 with one home run and 25 RBI in the minor leagues.
The 24-year-old received two different big-league call-ups in 2014, hitting .200 in 33 plate appearances over 10 games with the Mets.
New York picked Centeno, a native of Arecibo, Puerto Rico, in the 32nd round of the 2007 amateur draft. Considered a strong defensive catcher, Centeno has thrown out 37 percent of attempted base stealers in his minor-league career.
Centeno is a career .277 hitter in the minor leagues, but he has just 60 extra-base hits in 390 minor-league games.
The Brewers also announced Friday that left-hander Zach Duke, left-hander Tom Gorzelanny, first baseman Lyle Overbay, first baseman/third baseman Mark Reynolds and right-hander Francisco Rodriguez all became free agents Thursday.
With the five free agents removed and the addition of Centeno, Milwaukee's 40-man roster sits at 34. The Brewers now have three catchers on the 40-man roster, with Centeno joining Jonathan Lucroy and Martin Maldonado.
