Adding depth at third base, the Milwaukee Brewers claimed Luis Jimenez off waivers from the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim on Monday.
Jimenez spent most of 2014 with Triple-A Salt Lake, hitting .286 with 21 home runs and 76 RBI. In 18 games with the Angles, the 26-year-old hit .162 with two RBI.
Signed as by the Angels as an amateur free agent out of the Dominican Republic in 2005, Jimenez is a career .299 hitter in the minor leagues. His best season came in 2011 when he hit .290 with 18 HR with 94 RBI for Double-A Arkansas.
Jimenez played in the Futures Game in 2010 and made his major-league debut with the Angels in 2013. In 52 big-league games, Jimenez has hit .234 with eight doubles and seven RBI.
The Brewers won't know if they have a hole to fill at third base until incumbent starter Aramis Ramirez makes a decision on his $14 million mutual option for 2015. Ramirez and the Brewers both would have to exercise the option in order for the veteran third baseman to return.
Milwaukee is short on depth at third base in the minor leagues. Jason Rogers shifted across the diamond from first base to third base in 2014 while playing at Triple A, but he is still considered a work in progress.
The addition of Jimenez leaves Milwaukee's 40-man roster at 39.
