Old left-handed outfielders never die, they just go back to the minors.
Bobby Abreu is following Tony Gwynn Jr. to the Dodgers’ triple-A team in Albuquerque.
Both cleared waivers after the Dodgers designated them for assignment following the arrival of Shane Victorino as their everyday left-fielder.
The Dodgers announced after Wednesday’s game that Gwynn had cleared waivers and accepted an assignment to Albuquerque, and on Thursday afternoon Abreu followed suit.
Both are likely to be called up in September when rosters are expanded. Abreu could become a left-handed pinch hitter; Gwynn, could do the same, though he is also a good defender and could be used as a pinch runner.
Abreu gave the Dodgers a lift when they first signed him on May 4, but faded and hit only .165 in his last 79 at-bats. Gwynn hit .232 this season.
