TCU defensive end Devonte Fields says he's transferring to Stephen F. Austin.

Fields tweeted the news on his private Twitter account and confirmed the news to the Fort Worth Star-Telegram via text message.

TCU spokesman Mark Cohen said the school could only confirm that Fields remained "separated" from TCU.

Fields met with university officials to discuss his status as a student-athlete on Tuesday. The university announced later in the day that Fields would still be separated from the school after his alleged role in a July 20 incident in which his ex-girlfriend suffered a cut near her eye and was threatened.

The Fort Worth Star-Telegram reported that Fields was "unlikely" to be reinstated to the school.

Fields surrendered to police on July 24, two days after the university announced his "separation."

Fields won Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year honors as a true freshman in 2012, but was suspended for breaking team rules the following offseason and started just one game in 2013 after suffering a foot injury.

He earned rave reviews during spring practice from coach Gary Patterson and was named preseason Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year.

Patterson expressed surprise during Big 12 Media Days at the selection, and said Fields' likely backup, Terrell Lathan, was as good as any lineman on the team in 2013.
