Battered Tigers catcher Avila leaves Game 5
DETROIT -- Detroit Tigers catcher Alex Avila left Game 5 of the American League Championship Series in the fourth inning after sustaining a pair of injuries.
Avila was involved in a second-inning home-plate collision with Boston's David Ross, and the FOX broadcast reported that he had twisted his left knee.
Two innings later, Ross tipped a pitch directly into Avila's mask. Avila missed 14 games in August after suffering a concussion on Aug. 8 in Cleveland.
Avila finished the inning, but Brayan Pena hit for him with two on and one out in the bottom of the inning. Pena grounded into an inning-ending double play, leaving the Tigers trailing the Red Sox 4-0. It was the first postseason appearance of Pena's career.
The Tigers reported later that Avila is day to day with patellar tendon strain in his left knee.
