Baffert gets fifth San Fernando win
Fed Biz led all the way to win the $150,000 San Fernando Stakes by a head at Santa Anita on Saturday.
Ridden by Mike Smith, Fed Biz ran 1-1/16 miles in 1 minute, 42.34 seconds and returned $11.20 for a $2 win bet. It was Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert's record fifth win in the race.
Fed Biz was considered to be one of Baffert's top 3-year-olds a year ago but was never a factor on the Triple Crown trail.
''I expect so much from this horse. When he loses, it's very disappointing,'' Baffert said. ''He's a very talented horse, and he was good today going to the gate and he ran well.''
Tritap finished second, and Guilt Trip was another 2-3/4 lengths back in third. Guilt Trip was one of Baffert's three entries in the nine-horse field. His other one, 4-1 favorite Mile High Magic, was eased under Martin Garcia after breaking slowly.
The victory, worth $90,000, increased Fed Biz's career earnings to $274,456, with four wins in eight starts.
Baffert said it's likely Fed Biz would start next in the Santa Anita Handicap on March 2.
