Badgers get rematch with Virginia in Big 10/ACC Challenge
MADISON, Wis. — Wisconsin's basketball team will get an opportunity for a rematch in the Big Ten/ACC Challenge next season against Virginia.
The pairings, released Wednesday, have Wisconsin playing at Virginia on Dec. 4. Game time and television network have yet to be announced.
Last season, Virginia escaped with a 60-54 victory against Wisconsin at the Kohl Center during the teams' first-ever meeting in the challenge. UW is 6-8 all time in the event, recording a victory in three of the last five seasons.
Virginia coach Tony Bennett will have plenty of familiarity with Wisconsin and coach Bo Ryan. Bennett served as a manager on Wisconsin's staff under his father, Dick Bennett, in 1999-2000. He was an assistant coach at UW under Brad Soderberg in 2000-01 and spent two more seasons as an assistant coach under Ryan.
The Badgers trail only Illinois (seven) for most victories among Big Ten teams. Wisconsin is coming off its 15th consecutive appearance in the NCAA tournament after earning 23 victories in 2012-13, the ninth-highest win total in school history.
Virginia is 8-5 overall in the Big Ten/ACC Challenge and is 5-1 at home. The Cavaliers finished last season 23-12 and lost to Iowa in the quarterfinals of the NIT.
Both Wisconsin and Virginia play a similar style of basketball. The Cavaliers finished fifth in the country last season in scoring defense (55.6 points), while the Badgers finished seventh (55.9 points).
The ACC won the first 10 Challenges, but the Big Ten is unbeaten in the last four after last season’s event ended in a tie.
